Our school, which is located slightly outside city limits, was until recently, surrounded by rubble and broken down buildings. All the villages around the school were torn down to make way for redevelopment. It was slightly surreal to be a first hand witness to the massive scale of development in a third tier city in China. Dallin Smith, an American student from my DP class, was living in the dorms at school during the midst of all of this and wanted to document his experience of feeling isolated and different from the people around him as well as living in a remote location. A few other students and I helped him document this site-specific installation featuring himself in an animal Cage.
